How to take better photos on your holiday – A beginners guide

Ever looked through a holiday magazine or brochure and been jealous over the quality of the pictures that are shown? Or perhaps your wondered how to improve the quality of your snaps? Do you look at your friends pictures in awe? Following a few tips from some experts in the field can go a long way to improving the end result.

I have been taking pictures abroad for nearly thirty years and in the early days using a Russian made SLR I developed my own slides and prints. Digital photography has revolutionised the way pictures are taken and viewed and also added a new dimension and that is our ability to manipulate the picture after it has been taken. Taking pictures while you are on your holiday can provide a lasting memory for yourself, the opportunity to share your holiday experience with your friends. Also, using your phone nowadays provides the ability to send images to people while you are on holiday – your own “unique postcard”.

Many couples planning for marriage have invested on photos for their wedding. Despite the additional expense for a professional photographer, they still make sure that they have the best photos for their wedding. It is probably because the have seen the pictures of people taken from other wedding occasions. Professional photography is very appealing to the eye. Anyone who will look at it years from now will surely be able to see the details of how the wedding went. Every event with professional photos taken becomes remarkable.

So how do you know when you are ready for the job? Readiness is such a big question. You may have the talent to take the most beautiful shot but it takes a certain kind of person to take photos for wedding celebration. This is no trial and error and everything moves in fast paced. Sometimes you will never know what is expected. Not all that you see is still life to which the position never changes. People are all around you and you have to adjust to the stress and the chaotic environment that can possibly be around during the celebration. Therefore, getting in to the business of wedding photography is not easy. You have to know one first how ready you are to take the responsibility.

Sometimes in candid photography it may be better to spare a thought for your subject and not just your shot. A little thoughtfulness can go a long way.

This doesn’t really apply of course if you’re taking shots of inanimate objects. A tree is not likely to get offended if you shoot it at a moment when its branches look forlorn and sad – but a person might. (more…)

Have you ever hiked for two or three hours to get somewhere; took tons of photos, but when they came back you were disappointed? Somehow you lost the magic; it just didn’t feel the same. How do you know the difference between a waterfall that is 200 feet tall, or an extreme close-up of a creek trickling over some rock 2 inches tall? In some cases you don’t. Now if you are doing that on purpose, that’s cool. It’s called an optical illusion. But . . . if you’re doing it by accident, that’s called poor photography. (more…)
