Land Of Myth And Legend: Folklore And Fairy Tales Of Snowdonia

By: Steven Jones

Many visitors are drawn to Snowdonia for its evocative image as a misty, magical country steeped in history, tradition and folklore. Bards, druids, mythical beings and a strong connection with King Arthur go hand-in-hand with our mysterious, mountainous landscape and ancient, musical-sounding language. The romance, the magic and the mythology of Snowdonia make it just as popular a holiday destination for history and folklore addicts as it is for adrenalin junkies.

In simpler times, natural phenomena were explained away by the superstitious as magic or miracles, warring dragons or battling giants, or the work of the ‘Tylwyth Teg’, or ‘Fair Folk’. We may laugh today, but centuries ago it was considered perfectly plausible that a pile of rocks could appear on a mountainside because a giantess had taken fright and dropped the contents of her apron!

Yaowarat: Bangkok’s Colourful Chinatown

By: iguidebkk

Lying south of Dusit and Banglamphu, Bangkok’s Chinatown, locally known as the Yaowarat district, is one of the city’s major tourist attractions. It is a showcase of Chinese culture and enterprising spirit.

The city’s Chinatown district is an old business centre that covers a large area around the main Yaowarat Road and the adjoining Chareon Krung Road or New Road.

Chinese moved into the area as early as1780’s. It is oldest ethnic enclave in the city. When the royal family’s Grand Palace was constructed in 1782 by King Rama I to mark the foundation of Bangkok as Thailand’s new capital after Ayutthaya was annihilated by the Burmese, the Chinese community was asked to move just outside the city walls. The area then became the main centre of commerce for two centuries.

A cultural sight seeing in Bangkok can be a daunting task considering there are so many places to see all over town and to fight the traffic to reach all the places would require a lot of patience and perseverance. A good way to start off in terms of getting the most Bang(kok) for the Buck would be at the Grand Palace. Constructed simultaneously with the establishment of Bangkok by King Rama I the Great, the complex covers a total area of 132 rai and comprises 3 major quarters– the throne halls, royal residences and Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

20 Things You Never Knew About Australia

By: Mairead Foley

Things you may not have known about Australia:

Australia is…

1. …the world’s smallest continent. Not counted as an island, if it were, it would be the world’s biggest island being 3 times bigger than Greenland.

2. …the world’s flattest continent. Though the tallest mountain on Australia’s mainland, Mount Kosciuszko, is no glorified hill at 2,228 metres, the rest of Australia consists mainly of desert with little significant undulation.

3. …the driest inhabited continent. Australia is second only to Antarctica as the driest continent in the world (i.e. there is little liquid water). Since there are no permanent human settlements in Antarctica, Australia qualifies as the driest inhabited continent.
